Terra Bloom Coffee Roasters: Your Destination for the Perfect Cup

Bag of Roasted Coffee in Honduras

At-a-Glance

  • Elevation: ~1,100–1,700+ meters

  • Primary Varieties: Caturra, Catuai, Bourbon, Lempira, IHCAFE 90

  • Processing: Washed (primarily), some natural & honey

  • Harvest Season: November – March

  • Farm Size: Mostly smallholder (1–5 hectares)

Flavor & Cup Profile

  • Honduran coffees are known for their balance and approachability. Expect notes of chocolate, caramel, stone fruit, and gentle citrus, supported by medium acidity and a smooth, rounded body. Higher-elevation lots can show brighter fruit and floral complexity, while lower elevations lean sweeter and cocoa-forward.

Growing Environment

  • Honduras’ mountainous terrain provides ideal coffee conditions, with farms spread across forested highlands and fertile valleys. Elevation, moderate temperatures, and consistent rainfall support slow cherry maturation, allowing sugars and acids to develop evenly. Many farms are shade-grown, preserving soil health and biodiversity.

Farming & Processing

  • Coffee in Honduras is overwhelmingly grown by smallholder farmers who hand-pick ripe cherries. Washed processing dominates, contributing to clean, structured cups. Drying typically takes place on patios or raised beds. In recent years, farmers have increasingly experimented with honey and natural processes to add value and complexity.

History & Coffee Culture

  • While coffee arrived in Honduras in the 18th century, it remained secondary to exports like bananas and minerals for much of the country’s history. Political instability and foreign control limited growth until land reform and development programs in the mid-20th century helped coffee emerge as a vital livelihood. Today, coffee is deeply woven into rural life and national identity.

Varieties & Genetics

  • Traditional varieties like Bourbon and Typica coexist with modern cultivars developed for disease resistance and productivity, such as Lempira and IHCAFE selections. Replanting efforts in the late 20th century dramatically expanded production while maintaining quality potential at higher elevations.

Reputation & Popularity

  • Once overlooked, Honduras is now one of Central America’s largest coffee producers and an increasingly respected specialty origin. Participation in programs like Cup of Excellence has helped spotlight exceptional microlots, proving Honduras capable of both scale and high quality

What Makes This Region Unique

  • Honduras stands out for its transformation—rising from an underrecognized origin to a reliable source of clean, versatile, and affordable specialty coffee. It bridges everyday drinkability with emerging complexity, making it a favorite for both single-origin offerings and refined blends.

How We Use This Coffee

  • At TerraBLOOM, we value Honduras for its balance and flexibility. These coffees shine across multiple roast levels, perform beautifully in drip and espresso, and offer exceptional quality for the price—making them a cornerstone origin in our lineup.

Final Thoughts from Terrabloom Coffee Roasters...

  • Honduras coffees reward attention. Grown by small producers across diverse highland regions, they offer clarity, balance, and quiet complexity rather than extremes. Each lot reflects its place, process, and season, making Honduras an origin best appreciated not for a single flavor, but for its thoughtful range and consistency.
